Although thunderstorms happen often, only a relatively small number of people are killed by lightning. “More people die because of floods, hurricanes, or tornadoes than lightning,” says Barry Obers, a meteorologist. “Around the world, only ten thousand people are killed by lightning every year.” This might seem like a huge number but it is actually small when compared to the more than three billion lightning strikes that hit the earth annually. Lightning is usually accompanied by strong rain. This sends people indoors seeking shelter, which is the main reason so many lives are spared.
