Despite the obvious potential medical value of stem cells, their procurement, particularly in the case of embryonic stem cells, raises profound ethical questions. Harvesting embryonic stem cells requires the destruction of an embryo, and since there is no universally accepted notion of when life is considered to have begun, many are opposed to the practice.
Q: What is the speaker mainly discussing about stem cell research?

(c) The immense significance it has in the medical field
(d) The dangerous harvesting methods its use entails

7-8. Cereal grains can be used to create bioplastics, or plastics derived from plant sources rather than petroleum. These substances have many advantages, not least of which is that crops are a renewable resource. Through microbial fermentation and chemical conversion, cereal crops could replace fossilized hydrocarbons as the main source for many plastics. This would also lead to a reduced reliance on heavily polluting crude oil supplies and would also benefit farmers because of higher demand for cereal grains. However, it is important to note that bioplastics have drawbacks as well. First, the cultivation of cereals for the production of these substances contributes to the global food crisis. The land being set aside for this purpose is no longer being used to grow crops for human consumption. In addition, bioplastics actually release a greenhouse gas called methane into the atmosphere if they are disposed of improperly. And, unfortunately, this is a common occurrence because many people assume that bioplastic containers are biodegradable and simply throw them out with the regular trash.
7. Q: Which is correct according to the lecture?
(a) Hydrocarbons are a byproduct of plastic production.
(b) Purifying crude oil requires a large supply of energy.
(c) Growing cereal crops has become less profitable for farmers.
(d) Conventional plastics are made from petroleum products.
8. Q: What can be inferred about bioplastics from the lecture?
(a) They limit the amount of land for cultivation.
(b) They contribute to air pollution.
(c) They degrade when exposed to methane.
(d) They contaminate some food products.
7. (D) Conventional plastics are made from petroleum products.
8. (B) They contribute to air pollution.
