무더위가 절정인 요즘 공부하신다고 고생이 많으십니다. 휴가도 못가고 공부만 해야한다고 한탄하지 마시고 멋진 내년 여름휴가를 위해서 지금 조금 더 고생합시다.^^ 이번 시간에는 전치사와 관련해서 많은 분들께서 헷갈려 하시는 포인트를 짚어보겠습니다.
*포인트 정리(1)
Different from | 가장 일반적으로 사용되는 전치사가 ‘from’ 이다. |
1. ‘ ~ from’ is most commonly used. | |
Different than | ‘than’의 뿌리는 ‘비교급’이므로 ‘than’이 사용된 경우는 ‘정도의 차이’가 존재한다. (‘than’ is a matter of degree.) |
2. ‘ ~ than’ implies comparison and also this is mainly used to show difference in degree and the difference is usually quality not quantity. | |
Different to | ‘to’는 주로 영국식영어에서 사용이 된다. |
3. ‘ ~ to’ is mostly used in British English |
많은 분들께서 ‘different’ 뒤에 올수 있는 전치사가 ‘from/ than/ to’가 가능하다는 것을 잘 알고 계십니다. 하지만 이것을 제대로!! 꼼꼼하게!! 구분하지 않으면 헷갈리는 경우가 발생합니다.
문제는 바로 ‘similar to’와 구분해야 하는 상황입니다.
‘different to?? Similar from?? 뭐였지? 이거 반댄가? different는 뭐 많이 올수 있었던 것 같던데..아…미치겠구만…’
한번 쯤 이런 고민해보신적 있으신가요? 예문을 보시면 아마 ‘than’이 어떠한 경우에 사용이 되는지 쉽게 이해가 되실 것입니다.
e.g) Ji-sung Part is now extremely different than he was five years ago.
(= The speaker is trying to say that he is now much faster and stronger than he was in the past.)
e.g) Korean spoken by the people from Seoul is very different from the ones from Dae-gu.
(= The speaker is simply telling the difference between Korean standard language and dialect.)
