York Notes on Waiting for Godot





Lucky's Tirade : When rehearsing the play in Berlin in 1975, Beckett began with Lucky's speech, as though it contained the core of the play. The rehearsal diary kept by his assistant director, Walter Asmus, quotes Beckett's approach to the speech : 'We are going to divide it into three parts and the second part is going to be divided again into two sections.

  

   The first part is about the indifference of heaven, about divine apathy. This part ends with, 'but not so fast. . .'
