President Roh Moo-hyun yesterday said the country`s political culture should be advanced to a new dimension based on peaceful dialogue and compromise.
"Understanding and endorsing the other`s rights and opinions and accepting that they could hold different views, these are the qualities that should be instilled in domestic politics," said Roh during a speech for Memorial Day services.
The comments, although routine, raised eyebrows in the political arena as they come amid an escalating feud between the ruling Uri Party and the presidential office in the wake of the recent local elections.
Citing recent remarks from Roh saying elections are not the essence of true democracy, some Uri members suspect that the president has become unwilling to share the blame despite the public`s growing distrust for the administration`s economic policies.
The president rebuked such accusations, saying it is impossible for a country`s leader to ignore the implications of elections.
Yesterday, Roh said, "We must stop the division and let union prevail." He stressed that ostracizing or attempting to overthrow opponents must be ruled out even in cases where a consensus appears to be impossible.
"We have a tendency to label dissidents as ideological radicals, and this trend has victimized many innocent people. Let us try to learn from our past mistakes and make amends," he said.
The president, previously a human rights lawyer, himself has stirred up much ideological debate for his engaging attitude toward the reclusive North Korea. And back in the 1970s, former President Kim Dae-jung was once labeled a "communist" and charged with sedition.
In the domestic political arena, parties are bickering over key policy issues, including tax reforms, antispeculation measures and the national pension system.
These agendas resurfaced following the end of the local elections and will need extensive bipartisan effort to be implemented, pundits say.
The conservative Grand National Party that swept seats in the local elections last week is strongly opposed to the Uri Party`s plans to raise more tax revenues to help finance welfare projects and keep property prices down.
Uri members are now divided amongst themselves over whether to side with the president and forge ahead with these policies, or to acquiesce to public criticism and change direction.
