More than a million people are expected to pour into the streets nationwide to cheer for the Korean football team`s first game in the 2006 World Cup, police said yesterday.
With World Cup fever gripping the nation, people are set to pull all-nighters to enjoy the much-anticipated match against Togo, which will start at 10:00 p.m.
From late this afternoon, downtown areas will be engulfed with waves of red, led by the Red Devils, the core group of Korean football fans.
Those seeking fun and an expression of national pride will gather at 86 venues across the nation - Seoul Plaza in front of the Seoul City Hall, Cheonggyecheon Plaza, Gwanghwanmun in central Seoul, Daehakno in northern Seoul, Asian Games Main Stadium and Haewoondae beach in Busan, among others.
"I cannot wait to watch the game and I don`t mind missing some sleep time. I hope Korea will revive the miracle it achieved last time," said Kim Gwang-jin, a 32-year-old office worker in Seoul.
Korea advanced to the final four at the 2002 World Cup co-hosted by Korea and Japan. In the semifinal match between Korea and Germany, some 7 million people joined cheering crowds on the streets Various entertainment events such as concerts and firework displays will help capture the World Cup festival spirit.
At Seoul Plaza, music concerts will start at 5 p.m., turning up the heat for the match which will be televised later in the evening.
A total of 120,000 fireworks will light up the night sky before the match begins and when the Korean team scores a goal. The firework displays, organized by the Hanhwa Group, will take place at Seoul Plaza, and the World Cup stadiums in Seoul and Daejeon.
Similar events will also entertain fans during the Korean team`s other matches with France on June 19 and Switzerland on June 24.
The two games are scheduled to be played at 4 a.m. Seoul time, forcing many people to stay up all night.
The late night fever is likely to be a boon to the owners of food chains which provide late night snacks such as fried chicken.
To cope with traffic jams during street cheering, the police will deploy traffic policemen to control traffic in neighboring downtown areas. The authorities also plan to establish 151 checkpoints to counter possible accidents or terror attacks.

2006 월드컵 대회에서 한국의 첫 번째 경기인 토고전에는 전국에서 백만명 이상이 거리로 나와 응원할 것으로 보인다고 어제 경찰이 발표했다.
월드컵 열기가 전국을 휩쓰는 가운데 시민들은 밤 10시부터 시작되는 토고전을 지켜보기 위해 밤샘을 할 차비를 차리고 있다.
오늘 오후 늦게부터 도심지역은 골수 축구팬인 붉은 악마를 비롯한 빨간색 물결로 뒤덮일 것으로 보인다.
즐기면서 국가적 자부심을 떨치려는 사람들은 서울 시청앞 광장, 청계천 광장, 광화문, 대학로, 아시아게임주경기장, 부산 해운대 등 전국 86개 응원장소에 모일 예정이다.
“경기까지 기다릴 수가 없고 잠을 설쳐도 상관 없다. 한국이 지난 번 기적을 다시 한 번 이루기를 바란다”고 서울에서 회사원 김광진(32세)씨는 말했다.
한국은 2002년 한일 월드컵 때 4강에 진출했다. 한국과 독일의 준결승전은 700만명이 거리로 쏟아져 나와 응원을 했다.
콘서트와 불꽃놀이 등 다양한 행사가 열려 월드컵 축제의 기분을 더욱 만끽하게 해 줄 것이다.
서울프라자에서는 오후 5시부터 음악 콘서트가 열려 저녁에 TV로 방송될 경기의 열기를 미리 지필 것이다.
경기 시작 전과 한국팀이 득점하는 순간에는 총 12만발의 폭죽이 밤하늘을 밝히게 된다. 한화그룹이 주최하는 불꽃놀이는 서울프라자와 서울 월드컵경기장 그리고 대전에서 거행된다.
6월 19일 프랑스전과 6월 24일 스위스전 때도 비슷한 행사들이 준비되어 있다.
두 경기는 한국시간으로 새벽 4시에 벌어질 예정이어서 많은 사람들이 뜬눈으로 지새게 되었다.
심야의 열기는 프라이드 치킨 등 야식 가게 주인들에게 대박을 안겨 줄 것 같다.
노상응원 때 교통혼란에 대비하여 경찰은 교통경찰을 배치하여 도심 인근지역의 교통을 통제할 예정이다. 당국은 또 불의의 사고나 테러에 대비하여 검문소 151개소를 설치할 계획이다.
