South and North Korea yesterday opened four days of celebrations marking the 6th anniversary of the historic summit between the leaders of the two sides.
The events are taking place in Gwangju in Jeolla Province, which is considered a symbolic region representing South Korea`s fight for democracy in the 1980s.
Simultaneously, a summit gathering of Nobel Peace Prize winners is taking place in the city.
Several former Nobel Peace Prize winners, including former Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev will gather for three days from today to adopt a Gwangju Declaration calling for world peace.
Both events are being held amid improving inter-Korean exchanges despite the stalled six-party talks on North Korea`s nuclear ambitions.
At the center of the celebrations was former President Kim Dae-jung, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000 for his part in arranging the landmark summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.
The inter-Korean event kicked off in the evening with a congratulatory speech by Kim Dae-jung.
The two Kims are set to meet face-to-face for the second time later this month in Pyongyang.
The 20-member North Korean government delegation headed by Kim Yong-dae, vice president of the Presidium of the North Korean Supreme People`s Assembly, arrived in Gwangju in the morning on a direct flight from Pyongyang. A 128-member civilian delegation from the North is also attending the event.
"Glad to meet you all. Thank you for inviting us to this historic city of Gwangju," the head of North Korea`s civilian-delegation Ahn Kyung-ho said on arrival.
This year`s commemoration of the inter-Korean summit is the largest held so far. It comes at a particularly sensitive time with North Korea`s continuing boycott of the six-party talks following sanctions imposed by Washington for Pyongyang`s alleged financial crimes, including counterfeiting the American currency.
While opinions vary on the impact of Washington`s sanctions that began with a ban on doing business with a Macau-based bank, some sources suggest North Korea is suffering significantly after its main foreign exchange channel was closed. The South is likely to use the Gwangju event to prompt Pyongyang to return to the nuclear talks.
The opening ceremony began at 7 p.m. in the city`s World Cup stadium and was attended by some 30,000 guests.
Separate talks between the two Korean delegations were to be arranged later to discuss Kim Dae-jung`s visit to Pyongyang.
The South Korean government delegation was led by Unification Minister Lee Jong-seok.
The 300-member South Korean civilian delegation is headed by Paik Nak-chung, a Seoul National University professor and head of the South Korean organizing committee.
On the second day today, the South and North Korean delegations are to visit an art gallery exhibiting the works of a North Korean artist among other events.
The North Korean delegation returns to Pyongyang on Saturday afternoon.
