The Air Force said yesterday it has located a wrecked F-15K fighter jet which crashed last month in the East Sea, but said the aircraft`s black box - which contains its flight and communication records - has not been found yet.
"We`ve confirmed the location of the bigger wrecks of the crashed F-15K, but are not sure of whether the black box is also in the wreckage," Air Force spokesman Brig. Gen Kwon Oh-sung told reporters at a news briefing.
"However, we believe the black box could be somewhere in the area," Kwon added.
The U.S. Boeing-made advanced jet fighter crashed during a nighttime flight operation on June 7 in the East Sea, 48 kilometers off the coast of Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, killing its two pilots. The cause of the crash is not yet known.
The ill-fated F-15K was one of the Air Force`s next-generation jet fighters valued at about 100 billion won ($105 million) a unit. The Korean Air Force is in the process of purchasing 40 units by 2008 under a 5.6 trillion-won acquisition project dubbed F-X.
Following the crash, the Air Force said the F-15K purchases could be delayed depending on the results of the accident probe. So far four units, the first batch out of 40, were delivered to the Air Force last year.
Since the incident, the Air Force has been searching the sea area to retrieve the black box, which is key to determining the precise cause of the incident.
The black box can last for up to 30 days at a depth of about 6 kilometers underwater, so the Air Force is under pressure to retrieve it by the end of this week, according to Air Force officials.
The Air Korea and Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute used a 2,500-ton probe ship to determine the location of the wreckage. The ship is equipped with a sonar system which uses electronic detection waves to search deep sea waters.
The Air Force is currently searching for the black box with an unmanned submarine provided by KT Submarine Ltd., a private firm.

공군은 어제 지난 달 동해상에서 추락한 F-15K 전투기의 잔해를 발견했다고 말하고 그러나 비행 및 통신 기록을 담고 있는 블랙박스는 아직 발견되지 않았다고 말했다.
“F-15K 전투기의 큰 잔해가 있는 위치를 확인했으나 블랙박스의 유무는 아직 확실치 않다”고 권오성 공군 정책홍보실장이 기자회견에서 말했다.
하지만 블랙박스가 이 지역 어딘가에 있을 것으로 생각한다”고 권 실장은 덧붙였다.
미국 보잉사가 제작한 첨단 제트전투기는 7월 7일 경상북도 포항에서 48킬로미터 지점 해상에서 야간 훈련비행 중 추락해 조종사 두 명이 사망했다. 추락 원인은 아직 밝혀지지 않고 있다.
불운의 F-15K 전투기는 대당 가격이 1,000억원(1억 500만불)에 이르는 공군의 차세대 전투기 중 하나였다. 공군은 F-X라고 불리는 5.6조원 규모의 획득사업에 의거 2008년까지 40대를 구매하는 과정에 있다.
추락 이후 공군은 F-15K 전투기 구매가 사고조사의 결과에 따라 연기될 수 있다고 말했다. 지금까지 40대 중 일차분인 네 대가 작년에 공군에 인도됐다.
사건 이후 공군은 사고의 정확한 원인을 결정하는 데 관건이 되는 블랙박스 회수를 위해 해상을 수색해 왔다.
공군 관계자에 따르면 블랙박스는 수심 6킬로미터에서 30일까지 작동할 수 있기 때문에 공군은 이번 주까지는 회수해야 한다는 압박을 받고 있다.
공군과 한국해양연구원은 잔해의 위치를 파악하기 위해 2.500톤급 탐색선을 동원했다. 이 선박은 전자 탐지파를 이용해 심해를 수색하는 수중 음파탐지기를 갖추고 있다.
공군은 현재 민간회사인 KT 서브마린에 제공한 무인 잠수함으로 블랙박스를 찾고 있다.
