For packaged products requiring flat, edge, and corner drops, a mechanical drop
apparatus shall be used. It shall permit a packaged product to be placed, prior to
release, in a position that will assure correct orientation upon impact to within 2˚
for flat drops and 5˚ for edge/corner drops.
For palletized products, a shock machine may be used to conduct drop testing.
Rigidly secure the packaged product to the shock machine and set the table velocity
Change(△V) equal to the impact velocity that the packaged product would
experience during a free-fall drop event from the specified drop height
Compression testing is required for all shipping containers that are transported as standalone
packages during transit (i.e. RSC's, FOL's, HSC's, etc.). Examples of packaging not
subject to this requirement are accessory cartons that are shipped exclusively inside a
master pack, or circuit boards shipped in mailer style cartons. Contact Cisco Packaging
Engineering for clarification as to whether testing is required for a given shipping
container.
