When two DeHavilland Comets came apart in midair just months apart in 1954,authorities demanded to know what had happened before they would allow more flights.
Researchers suspected metal fatigue was the cause of the fatal accidents, and to prove it developed a new method of pressure testing using water tanks. Results of the test evntually changed both the way planes are designed, and also how those designs are tested.
