TEPS는 시간과의 전쟁(race against time)이라고 한다.

1. The earth's protective ozone layer will hit its all-time thinnest by 2000 or 2001, the World Meterological Organization said Monday. Despite forecasts that international measures to halt the decline will help the layer improve by the middle of the next century, the ozone layer is at its most vulnerable stage now and things will get worse before they get any better, the WMO said. The ozone layer is a protective fragile shield of gas that absorbs the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun but has been increasingly pierced by holes caused by man-made chemicals. The holes are blamed for causing skin cancer.

The earth's protective ozone layer will hit its all-time thinnest by 2000 or Despite forecasts that ~, the ozone layer is~로 구성이 되어 있는데 이 경우 the ozone layer is ~ 이하를 잘 읽는다. The ozone layer is ... but has been ... 등위 접속사(and, or, but, ...)

Though there certainly may be areas of friction in Israel between some ardently observant Jews and some equally ardent secular Jews, as described in your article "The Religious Wars," most Jewish Israelis feel and act as a single people; a family united by its religious heritage. Its members choose to observe its rules to a greater or lesser degree. The populace in Israel is
not polarized, nor on the brink of a religious civil war.

종속절에 ardently(열렬히), secular(세속의, 비종교적인) 등의 단어를 몰랐다고 하더라고 긴장할 필요는 없다. 주제문인 most Jewish Israelis feel and act as a single people 부분을 제대로 파악하는 것이 더 중요하다.

마지막 부분에 so, therefore, thus, in conclusion 등의 결론을 유도하는 연결어가 오게 되면 주제문인 경우가 많다. 또, should, must, ought to, have to가 오면 ~해야한다고 필자가 주장하고 있으므로 주제문인 경우가 많다.

Now that both India an Pakistan have nuclear weapons, the UN should enforce mandates that will prevent a nuclear confrontation between these two irrationally aggressive neighbors. Sanctions will not work - indeed, both countries had already weighed the consequence before recklessly pressing ahead with their nuclear preparations. What is needed to bring India and Pakistan to their senses is the threat of a multinational action that could end in a preemptive military strike against their nuclear bomb making facilities.

수사 의문문이란 Who knows it?

George Orwell's famous novel "1984" opens with its hero, Winston Smith returning to his dirty tenement. Attached to a wall is a "telescreen." It is in essence a bilateral television, which is designed to watch Smith's every movement while barking government propaganda at him. It was naive of Orwell to believe that technology would become the tool of totalitarian dictatorship. Is there any one who thinks that the world would be a more democratic and freer world today if computers, fax machines and the Internet didn't come into being? This is one that Orwell really did get wrong.

Is there any one who thinks that the world would be a more democratic and freer world today if computers, fax machines and the Internet didn't come into being?
