가정법이란 : 현재나 과거의 반대 상황을 가정
* If I were tall = 현재의 반대
* If I had been tall = 과거의 반대
가정법은 주로 ‘If’로 시작, 특별한 시제를 사용
* 현재 >> 과거 시제
* 과거 >> 과거 완료 시제
# 가정법의 if는 조건절의 if와 다르다.
If you need any help, >> 사실 그대로를 표현
If I were you, >> 현재 상황과 반대
1. 가정법 미래/과거/과거 완료 문장
미래 | If + S + should + 동사원형, S + 조동사 + 동사원형 >> 가능성이 희박한 미래, 미래의 조건 |
과거 | If + S + 동사 과거, S + 조동사 과거 + 동사원형 >> 현재의 반대를 가정 |
과거 완료 | If + S + had + pp, S + 조동사 과거 + have + pp >> 과거의 반대를 가정 |
If it should snow tomorrow, I will stay indoors. / 미래
If that television were cheaper, I would buy it today. / 과거
If someone had offered me a ride, I might have gone to the concert. / 과거 완료
# 혼합가정법에서는 if절과 주절의 시제가 다르다.
혼합 가정법 공식 |
If 주어 had + p.p, 주어 would 동사원형 과거에 “~했었다면” 현재 “~할 텐데” |
If I had accepted the team leader position last I would be a manager now.
주절에 “now/today”와 같은 단서가 제공
2. if가 없는 가정법 : 가정법 도치와 without 구문
# if가 생략되면 도치가 일어난다.
If 주어 should 동사원형 >> Should 주어 동사원형 |

# if절을 대신하는 ‘without + 명사’
If it were not for + 명사 / If it had not been for + 명사
