◆ 등위접속사의 종류

‘FANBOYS’

[For 이유, And 그리고, Nor ~도 아니다, But 그러나, Or 또는, Yet 그러나, So 결과]

1. 단어, 구, 절 연결→ ANBOY[for/so는 절과 절만 연결]

2. S+V,______S+V→ 문장 중간에 위치

3. S+V______V→ ANBOY[앞 문장과 동일한 주어 및 조동사 생략 가능]

Students need to be diligent and responsible.

John usually spends his free time reading or exercising.

We must clean the house, for my parents are visiting this evening.

◆ 숙어 표현(등위접속사+부사)

and so/and therefore→ 그래서

and then→ 그러고 나서

and yet→ 그런데도

or else→ 그렇지 않으면

I dislike large cities and yet I live in Los Angeles.

◆ 등위접속사는 문맥에 맞는 것을 선택

♦ 상관접속사는 맞는 짝끼리 쓰여야 한다.

and로 연결되면 복수취급, or는 뒤에 나오는 명사에 수를 일치

☺ 등위접속사와 상관접속사는 난이도가 낮은 문법이에요. 외워야 할 것이 명확히 정해져 있기 때문이죠. 등위접속사의 경우 강사님이 ‘For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So’의 첫 글자를 따서 ‘F A N B O Y S’ 라고 알려주셨는데 어떻게 이렇게 기발한 생각을 하셨는지 신기하기도 하고 재미있기도 해요. 이런 두문자 암기가 어떻게 보면 유치하지만 암기효과는 다른 어떤 방법보다도 뛰어난 것 같아요. 강사님 덕분에 그냥 외우면 잘 안 외워질 수도 있었던 등위접속사를 보자마자 외울 수 있게 되었어요. 아무튼 등위접속사를 중심으로 좌우에 같은 품사나 구조를 쓰면 되는데 품사가 혼동되는 단어들이 있기 때문에 조심해야 해요. 예를 들어 ‘friendly(친절한)’와 같이 부사처럼 생겼는데 형용사인 단어들이 꽤 많이 있거든요. 이런 것들은 평소에 관심을 가지고 외워야 해요. 등위접속사와 상관접속사의 수 일치에서 조심해야 할 부분은 ‘or’가 있을 때 이 뒤에 나오는 명사에 수를 일치시켜야 한다는 것이에요. 예를 들어 ‘or’ 앞에 나오는 명사가 복수이고, ‘or’ 뒤에 나오는 명사가 단수일 때 왠지 앞의 복수명사에 수를 일치시켜야 할 것 같은데 그렇게 하면 안 되고 무조건 뒤의 단수명사에 수를 일치시켜야 해요.
