to부정사는 그동안 귀에 못이 박히도록 많이 들어왔던 것이기 때문에 잘 알고 있다고 생각했는데 강의를 듣다보니 미처 알지 못했던 것들도 있다는 사실을 깨달았습니다. to부정사가 목적어, 보어, 수식어자리에 온다는 것은 알고 있었지만 문장 맨 앞의 주어자리에 온다는 것은 좀 낯설게 느껴졌습니다. 지금까지 그러한 문장을 본 적이 거의 없기 때문입니다.
to부정사와 비교해야 할 것이 바로 전치사to 입니다. 이 둘은 모양은 같지만 기능이 다르기 때문입니다. to부정사의 to 뒤에는 동사원형이 오지만 전치사to 뒤에는 명사가 오므로 주의를 기울여야 합니다.
to부정사를 필요로 하는 동사들의 종류도 꽤 많은데 단순히 동사만 외울 것이 아니라 예문을 통해서 하나하나 익혀나가야 효과가 있습니다.어휘는 지난 시간에 이어서 명사어휘를 세 번째로 공부했습니다. 명사 하나에서 파생된 단어들이 여러 개인 product라는 단어를 배웠습니다. product는 ‘제품’이라는 뜻으로 쓰이는데 production으로 바꾸면 ‘생산’, productivity로 바꾸면 ‘생산 능률/생산성’, produce로 바꾸면 ‘농산물(과일/야채)’라는 뜻이 됩니다. 한 단어를 통해서 여러 가지 단어를 배울 수 있으니 공부시간도 절약되고 암기도 더 잘됩니다.

①명사 역할: 동사하기, 동사 하는 것
To arrive on time is very important.
Jennifer refused to change her opinion.
Her goal is to hand in reports this week.
②형용사 역할: 동사 할, 동사 해야 할, 동사 하기 위한
Ms. Akashi has an urgent meeting to attend.
③부사 역할: 하기 위해서
To buy supplies, we need approval from the director.

①동사+to부정사
[agree, hope, promise, choose, learn, refuse, decide, offer, want, fail, plan, wish]
The congressmen agreed to aid small enterprises.

②동사+목적어+to부정사
[ask, invite, remind, encourage, permit/allow, want, force, persuade, warn]
The manager encouraged us to think creatively.
The guard allowed me to enter the building.
