비교구문의 경우 비교급은 원급에 er을 붙이고, 최상급은 원급에 est를 붙이면 다 된다고 생각했었는데 꼭 그렇지만은 않다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 원급이 짧을 경우에는 그렇게 하면 되지만 원급이 길 경우에는 비교급은 원급 앞에 more를 붙이고, 최상급은 원급 앞에 most를 붙여야 합니다. 하지만 이것이 모든 형용사와 부사에 적용되는 것은 아닙니다. ‘good/well-better-best’와 같이 비교급과 최상급이 불규칙적으로 변화하는 경우도 있기 때문입니다. 이러한 불규칙 변화는 무조건 외우는 방법밖에 없습니다.

비교급에서 주의해야 할 것은 비교급 앞에도 the를 사용할 수 있다는 점입니다. 보통 the는 최상급 앞에 사용되는데 ‘the+비교급~, the+비교급~’이나 ‘the+비교급+of the two’와 같은 구조가 될 때에는 비교급 앞에도 the를 사용할 수 있습니다.

최상급에서 주의해야 할 것은 부사의 최상급 앞에는 the를 사용할 수 없다는 점입니다. 보통 형용사의 최상급 앞에 the를 사용하는 것과는 대조적입니다.

어휘는 지난 시간에 이어서 부사어휘에 대해서 공부했습니다. patiently같은 경우 patient가 ‘환자’라는 뜻이므로 환자와 관련 있는 뜻이라고 생각했었는데 실제 뜻은 ‘참을성 있게, 끈기 있게’여서 조금 의외였습니다. 주관적으로 뜻을 외우면 실수할 수 있으므로 조심해야겠다는 생각이 듭니다.
