The "Ken Burns effect" is a film technique where a camera moves across a still photograph to create the illusion of motion. But there's another, more important "Ken Burns effect." Ken Burns is a renowned American documentary filmmaker who has been focusing on difficult chapters of American history for over 40 years.

His work has had a significant impact on raising awareness and generating interest in various historical topics. For instance, his series "The Civil War" drew nearly 40 million viewers and led to increased visits to battlefields. Similarly, "The National Parks" series in 2009 had a positive effect on park visits.

Ken Burns has covered a wide range of subjects, including biographies of prominent figures like Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Jefferson, as well as in-depth explorations of topics like baseball, jazz, slavery, and the Vietnam War. His goal is to present a more unvarnished and honest account of American history.

His latest documentary, "The American Buffalo," tells the story of two interconnected tragedies: the mass slaughter of buffalo in the late 19th century and the near-extinction of the Native American tribes that depended on these animals for thousands of years. The film is deeply rooted in Native American perspectives and reveals a tale of destruction and partial recovery that many Americans are unfamiliar with.

The buffalo played a vital role in Native American culture, providing sustenance, and every part of the animal was used. However, as the United States expanded, the buffalo were ruthlessly hunted for their hides, leading to a rapid decline in their numbers. Theodore Roosevelt once mentioned that the buffalo's extinction was seen as a way to deal with the "Indian question," indirectly forcing Native Americans onto reservations.

The latter part of the film focuses on efforts to save the buffalo from extinction, led by tribal communities, conservationists, and even former hunters who regretted their actions. In a time when American history is often debated, Ken Burns believes that documentaries like this one can remind people of the complexity and contradictions within the nation's history.
